Spotlight: Kathy McCrystal
About three years ago, Verizon Wireless Director Kathy McCrystal decided she wanted to help someone in her community and set an example for her children. She volunteered with the Connections Program, sponsored by Catholic Charities in Metuchen, N.J. The program matches volunteers with children referred by their school or social services. Since that time Kathy has mentored three children — all with different backgrounds and goals.
"The program gives these kids another adult to reach out to, as well as the opportunity to experience different social and educational activities they may not be able to do with their own family. The time I spend with them is very rewarding for me. To see them smile, have fun and enjoy doing things with my sons and with me is the best part of the program."
In addition to her time, Kathy was able to donate a $750 grant from the Verizon Foundation’s Volunteer Incentive Program. "The money is helping to pay for activities for the kids and to support the program’s mission to help children who are experiencing dysfunctions in their home life."
